Spirituality: The Key To Optimal Health

Posted at November 30, 2008 by admin

Modern medicine has steered clear of anything that smacks of spirituality believing that a purely “scientific” or “mechanistic” understanding of the functioning of the human body would suffice in helping one achieve optimal health.

As a result many individuals have allowed themselves to “buy into” this view of health and have, for years, treated their own bodies as if it was a machine that needs to be maintained.

In spite of this we still find that there are many illnesses that have yet to be understood, and many new ones always creeping up on the horizon of our experience. In my view it is because modern medicine has missed what I believe is the key to all healing. Let me explain.

The integrity of your physical body, in my view depends on one key factor, you. Now by “you” I mean the essence of who you are. So who are you exactly? Well if you reflect on the experience you have when you say to yourself the word “myself” you will likely recognize, if you are aware enough of what you feel, that there is a definite place in you body where this word “resonates” for you inside you body.

Much like two tuning forks, resonating in synchrony, the word “myself” sets into “vibration” or “awakens” inside you a “feeling” of the being inside your body that represents that Self. Notice where this resonance lives inside of your physical body. Many experience it in their mid-chest or over their heart region.

Now this might surprise you, or at least your mind, if that is where you “thought” you were. This is because, since the time our “personalities” started to form we adopted the idea that we were our personalities, and of course everyone knows where that is stored inside us, in our brains/minds.

As a result you, the real you, the one that you may have felt when I asked you to do the little experiment with the word “myself”, which I will call the Divine Self, has become somewhat forgotten and buried. Much like forgetting yourself and adopting an acting role scripted by the life experiences that form the personality.

In all the years I practiced as a physician and psychiatrist, the Divine Self was never spoken about as an important factor in the healing process of an individual. It seems kind of strange, doesn’t it that the being whose body is being addressed is not even included or consulted in such an important process?

I have come to realize that in fact it is because this Divine Self is forgotten and is not consulted that the physical body gets ill in the first place. This will become clearer if I suggest that it is the role and function of this Divine Self to facilitate the proper and optimal functioning of the physical (and mental/emotional) body.

I have worked with individuals to facilitate the re-emergence of the Divine Self that lives in their physical bodies with a modality that I have called the Mind Resonance Process(TM) (MRP). It acts to dismantle the beliefs that support the idea that an individual “is” their personality. When these beliefs are effectively released what re-emerges is an experience of the individuals Divine and Spiritual Self.

What follows spontaneously is an experience of inner peace, joy, energy, lightness, a reduction in physical symptoms and in some cases, that I am currently researching further, anecdotal evidence that the re-emergence of the Divine Self can effect
the healing of some unhealable conditions (See “Reversing Macular Degeneration Without Drugs or Surgery).

It is becoming my view that the Divine Self must reclaim executive control over the physical body (i.e. the Divine or Spiritual Self must be in the body and orchestrating its functioning) for the body to heal and achieve optimal health. Without it the body will always break down.

It’s no wonder that the amount of time, energy and money that has poured into medical research has been so great over the last century. When you decide to exclude the very thing that is responsible for keeping the physical body healthy how successful can you be in supplanting it? Not very, in my view.

Dental Implants – A Blessing in Disguise and Dental Surgery in India

Posted at by admin

As compared to other parts of the body, we pay the least amount of attention to our teeth till we get alarming signals. After a visit to the Dentist which is always long overdue in any case, we promise ourselves to be more particular in future but once we get busy in our daily activities we forget about it all over again.

Due to this careless attitude, we ruin a few teeth. But thanks to our Dental Surgeons and technology, they have devised ways to cure and fix our teeth and restore our smiles. Dental Implants are a blessing in disguise where missing tooth/teeth are replaced so perfectly that no one can ever make out the difference. Implants help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration which occurs when teeth are missing.

Dental Implants are the most rapidly growing field in dentistry today. Similar to a hip replacement, dental implants are made from surgical grade titanium. This dental implant system is thought by many to be the finest in the world.

The implants are tiny titanium posts, which are inserted into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root substitutes. They are then surgically placed into the jaw bone. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for the artificial teeth. Then Small posts are attached to the implant, which protrude through the gums. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.

In most cases, the placement of dental implants involves one surgical procedure. First, implants are placed within your jawbone. For 6-12 weeks following surgery, the implants bond with the jawbone. The entire procedure usually takes two to six months. Most patients do not experience any disruption in their daily life.

In India, we can boast highly skilled Dental surgeons at par with the international standards. Which is why a lot of people from the U.K., U.S.A. and Canada are preferring to visit India for their Dental Treatments as they save enormously on cost, get the same quality of treatment and can enjoy a holiday with their families or accompanying person.

Air Purifiers, Are They Worth The Money?

Posted at November 27, 2008 by admin

When you suffer from allergies or asthma, you may think it may be a good idea to purchase an air filtration system for your house. But one legitimate question would be: is it worth paying the money? Experts say that it can ease your symptoms, but that is true only if you make other changes in your environment, too.

These changes concern avoiding the carpeting, finding another place for your pets and using air conditioning during the warmer months in order to get rid of the pollens or allergens. You should as well clean the air filters, the air conditioner filters, and the duct filters every season. Another possibility is not to open your windows and to avoid staying a lot outdoors, during the period when your allergies are acute.

If you have tried all these and didn’t find adequate relief, then it may be better for you to think about using an air filter.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as well as the American Lung Association recommends air filtration for those who suffer from allergies and asthma, but not as a solution per-se.

Controlling the pollution and ventilation that can cause allergies is more important; there are arguments on whether filters can give relief from asthma in a house that is clean and well ventilated. Air cleaners may be helpful in some situations and may help reducing allergy or asthma symptoms, but that air cleaning is not the one to reduce consistently the symptoms.

Perfect Christmas Tree Lights from John Lewis

Posted at by admin

The festive season is a fantastic time to spend with your loved ones and we all want it to turn out being as wonderful as you can possibly make it – a crucial portion of the X-mas tradition is owning a properly decked-out house to celebrate the holiday period. A good portion of the time people wind-up with terrible adornments and lights arranged around a shoddy X-mas tree. Log on and look at the John Lewis web-site and inject the sparkle back into Christmas.

At 2 time the most eye catching of most living rooms is the X-mas tree – decorated with Xmas lights, trinkets and chocolates, looming above the numerous jauntily coloured presents underneath; it is the most obvious thing almost all folk focus on when they come in to a abode and for that reason you will certainly like it to be right. Choosing from the magical products currently on display on the John Lewis web site could not conceivably be made any simpler – simplistic navigation on the left hand side and at the top of each and every web-page makes the job of getting through to the specific range you want to obtain no trouble at all.

Patently, when you have chosen your X-mas tree – along with the perfect Christmas lights to compliment it – you will assuredly like to pick out a cluster of X-mas ornaments for the remainder of the living-room. These could possibly come in the specific form of X-mas lights, hanging displays or tinsel to name but a scattering. Fighting through the festive crowds to pick these items up can end up being an unwanted chore and the extra cost of delivery tacked on by some other web-sites could well modify that ‘great price’ you clap eyes on into a deal more similar something you would chance upon on your local high street. Christmas tree lights at great prices can be found on the John Lewis website.

Never fear – with John Lewis you’ll not simply bypass the hassle of the 2 rush by making purchases from the privacy of your own home, but you will also get absolutely free normal delivery for all items – with next-day home delivery available if you should be in a massive rush. Not just that but free returns are also available, so you can really buy in complete confidence. Therefore, why not let John Lewis help make this festive season a really special one.

Green Bamboo: Strength in Flexibility

Posted at November 24, 2008 by admin

Those who have watched the movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” would be familiar with the imagery of bamboo: flexible yet firm, delicate yet strong. These unique qualities make the bamboo fit snugly into ancient Chinese philosophy and endow the health benefits of the bamboo with an air of wisdom and grace.

History

In China, the highly revered bamboo reflects celestial unity in ancient art, such as ethereal paintings of misty mountains with bamboo leaves, delicate bamboo weavings and bamboo baskets.

The strength of bamboo is apparent when the fury of the atomic bomb unleashed at Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War Two only damaged bamboo marginally. It was also one of the first plants to reappear after the deadly war, thus occupying a special place in the hearts of the Japanese. Visitors to Japan will be charmed by the melodious sound of nature when a breeze rustles through bamboo-made wind chimes.

In Hawaii, where bamboo is known as “ohe”, bamboo crafts have been elevated to an art, with intricate designs of delicate tapa stamps carved from split bamboo.

Before the invention of wheels, bamboo provided stout shafts for carrying baskets woven from bamboo fibres, hence revealing its wide spectrum of uses.

Ecology

Bamboo has strong survival skills. Like grass, it grows rapidly and is able to propagate by itself. Like wood, it is strong and can be found throughout the world. Although bamboo only needs minimal water to sustain itself, as little as 20 inches of rainfall for some species, most large bamboos grow quicker when exposed to full sunlight.

Growing profusely in poverty-ridden and resource-scare areas, bamboo is like a gift to humanity, giving the most of itself during its short lifespan of a few years.

The height of bamboo varies from 30cm dwarf plants to hovering timber bamboos of over 40m.

Bamboos are classified according to the type of roots. Runners, which belong mainly to tropical bamboos, spread exuberantly while clumpers, which belong to temperate bamboos, expand slowly from the original planting. There are also root systems that combine the two types.

Bamboo leaves come in a large variety. There are soft velvety leaves, leaves with saw-toothed edges and leaves with tiny wisps of hair-like adornments around the bases of the stems and culm (stem) sheaths.

Health Notes

Bamboo, a vital element in Traditional Chinese Medicine, has a temperament that ranges from mild to cooling. So although specific health benefits differ according to the various parts and flavours of the bamboo, generally, bamboo is able to help detoxify, repel insects, eliminate heatiness, clear phlegm, curb vomiting, restore vitality and quench thirst. Small wonder then that the bamboo is the panda’s favourite. In fact, with plenty of crude protein, bamboo is also used frequently as animal fodder.

Bel’Air’s green bamboo essential oil is the result of comprehensive research. From the joints of bamboo stems, a beneficial essence known as bamboo sil is extracted. It contains abundant amounts of silice, which is a rich store of calcium. After aromatherapy with green bamboo essential oil, calcium would be replenished and bones would be strengthened. This innovative essential oil can also alleviate old age problems such as backache and rheumatism, as well as enhance calcium contents in children and teenagers, hence boosting their growth.

Facts to Consider while Buying Glass Sinks

Posted at by admin

Sinks made of glass are probably the most recent ones to have entered the market. These types of sinks are ideal for those who love to turn their bathrooms and kitchens into an exquisite art piece. Apart from looking elegant and ravishing, glass sinks match well with both traditional and contemporary bathrooms and kitchen designs.

However, one must consider certain facts while planning to purchase a glass sink.
The foremost factor is the durability. Although glass sinks are considerably durable, they are not as strong as a ceramic or porcelain sink. The glass used in the sink manufacturing must be tempered and thick so that it can withstand activities such as shaving, brushing teeth or applying make-up that require gushing water flow. Appropriate space must be provided for installing glass sinks. These sinks require slightly bigger space than other types of sinks so as to minimize the risk of breaking. It is wise to install a glass sink in areas that do not have much traffic or in houses where people know how and when to use these sinks.

Glass sinks may not be ideal in a family with young children or homes having a single bathroom. Last point is the price range. Depending on the quality and the strength of glass used, the price of glass sinks can be anything between $50 and $10,000. One should never buy a sink that comes at low price and doesn’t carry any warranty.

Kitchen countertops and sinks make the most heavy of renewal work, find out more about these home improvement elements.

Hypnosis and the Magical World of Words

Posted at November 23, 2008 by admin

One of the many things that I find fascinating about hypnosis is the power of words. The same words spoken to someone in normal conversation take on an almost mystical power when they are spoken during a hypnotic trance.

When we are in our normal everyday, alert, aware, waking state we are in a state of defensiveness. There is a part of our mind that is constantly on the lookout for danger. This is nothing sinister – it’s just healthy self-protectiveness. Now in the good old days, from an evolutionary point of view, there was constant danger. Those who weren’t that alert didn’t survive for very long and so if you buy into the idea of Natural Selection it makes sense to assume that the most frightened individuals were the ones who lived to pass on their genetic material.

Now there isn’t really that much physical danger around in our day-to-day lives. Crossing the road is perhaps the biggest threat many of us experience in a normal day. So, given that a significant part of ourselves evolved to ensure we survive, and that this part doesn’t have much to occupy it in the physical realm, and perhaps it gets a little bored, then maybe, just maybe, this boredom causes it to look for threat where there isn’t any – in thoughts, and in words.

The consequence of this is that when we listen to the words of another our defensive systems are on the alert. You can tell this easily because if any words are spoken that are hurtful, disrespecting, unloving, angry… your body reacts instantaneously with an emotional experience. The uncomfortable emotion that you experience happens faster than thought so it may be the symptom of built-in defence-mechanisms.

Next time you are in conversation, particularly a conversation with someone you have only just met (often the case in therapy), watch your thoughts. Notice the thoughts that magically appear in response to the words of the other. Notice how you are watching for signs of approval or disapproval of you. Notice your sensitivities. Notice how the things you watch for are different depending on whether or not you have an inner feeling of liking or disliking for this person. Notice how your thoughts are forming responses and watching for the gap to appear so that you can express them and see whether or not your words are valued. Notice how you are aware at a deep level of whether or not this stranger is interested in you as a person. Notice how your words will be moulded in order to ensure that they see you in a good light and form a positive impression of you.

This whole experience is a defensive dance.

And it’s fine. We all do it. It’s good to be aware of it and watch it, but it’s perfectly normal.

Except when the only tools available to heal your mind are the only tools your mind is defended against – Words!

So what the trance experience achieves is to distract this defensive aspect of self by sending it off into the half-asleep world of daydream; where sufficient awareness is retained about what is happening so that should real danger arise, effective action could be taken more easily than rousing from full sleep. And so first of all words are used to direct conscious defensive awareness into this half-awake/half-asleep world. And not just any words – words that direct conscious attention to focus on certain thoughts and ideas gradually moving from an awareness of the outside world to the inside world.

Once words have achieved this then the defensive part of the mind is drifting and half-dreaming and generally isn’t very bothered about what’s being said, and so whatever is said has more power because it moves directly into subconscious awareness unfiltered and unchallenged – as long as the words do not themselves threaten deeper values and beliefs that are close to the very core of being. This is why no hypnotist can make you do anything you don’t want to do, or cause you to act against a deeply held moral or ethical value.

And so hypnotists sometimes tell stories – stories with a lesson that isn’t obvious. Because the lesson isn’t obvious no critical judgements kick in from the conscious mind, but the subconscious mind stores the information, evaluates it and brings about the necessary behaviour changes.

On other occasions hypnotists just tell you, in trance, what new behaviour you are going to find yourself engaging in – like not smoking, or not eating out of habit. Sometimes they even just encourage the creation of pictures in your mind and these pictures symbolically represent the desired changes to the subconscious mind, and the subconscious mind just evaluates the symbol and behaviour changes result.

And all that is used are words – words that cause withdrawal from the cares of the world, words that cause behavioural changes, words that describe a new future or change an uncomfortable past; but most importantly words that inspire you to believe that you are capable of more than you ever thought possible, and words that encourage you to see that your past does not have to be an anchor holding you in a cold and stormy sea.

Words are powerful. They can be used to bring about changes you didn’t believe were possible. But they can only do this if you are undefended against them.

So notice your words and the words of others and see if they really mean what they seem to mean, or if they are conveying some other message to your subconscious mind. You don’t have to be in a trance to be influenced. And while hypnotic trance is designed to allow you to be influenced in a positive way – not everyone who uses words has your best interest at heart.

Stopping Colds in Their Tracks

Posted at by admin

We all know the nasty sensation of coming down with a cold: when you feel like your head is stopped up, when your nose is constantly running, and when nothing tastes right.

Most of what we call colds are technically known rhinitis, and are caused by various micro-organisms settling on nasal or throat surfaces, and the body’s reacting to them. When your nose is running, your body is trying to get rid of those organisms.

The important thing is to let the body get rid of the junk. People are always trying to avoid sneezing, runny noses, and congestion. But the problem is that they are often treating the symptoms, and not the problem itself. Water treats the problem. Make sure you have plenty of water to let the body do its job.

One of the reasons the old advice (“Rest, and get plenty of liquids!”) was good advice was you could have time to let the body work on getting rid of whatever is causing problems. If you take something to stop your runny nose, all you’ve done is give yourself a dry (and usually sore) throat, and prevent the body from blowing out what’s causing the problem.

It’s not easy to conduct a business meeting if you’re nose is constantly running. It’s not easy to teach if you’re constantly sneezing. But those are some of the ways your body is trying to cure you. If you possibly can, take some time off, rest, and you will recover much faster.

Your body will be going through a great deal of water, and you need to replenish it frequently. It’s easy to forget how much liquid goes out in a runny nose (and probably not something you want to ponder a lot, either!) And every time you sneeze, your body loses water.
So a good rule of thumb is for every time you sneeze or blow your nose, drink some water. Every time. Now the problem is that most folks just don’t feel like eating when they have a bad cold. Neither do they feel like drinking. So you may have to fool your body into thinking that you’re drinking something special that’s not just the water it needs.

The easiest way is to slice a lemon (or lime) and put a slice into your glass. Unlike sugar and other things we are prone to add to water, the trace of lemon adds nothing but taste: no calories, no caffeine, and no carbohydrates.

Another trick is to heat the water. That’s right: serve up plain, hot water in a special cup, and maybe jazz it up with lemon, too.

And as long as you’re drinking your quota of 20 glasses of water a day, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy some other liquids. Hot broth, juices (though not too much: your body needs a rest from digesting, too!) and hot teas can be enjoyable, and help alleviate the boredom.

If you’re drinking tea, you might want to go with herbal, decaffeinated teas. I have nothing against caffeine, when used in moderation, and I drink caffeinated tea almost every day. But when you are sick (whether from a cold, or from something else) allow your body to clear out some of the corridors. Don’t give it the extra task of dealing with caffeine … at least not now.

The important thing is to keep consuming liquids. Your body may be cleansing out some toxins, and it needs fluids to do that job. Monitor factors such as the color of your urine. If the urine is a dark or brownish color, you need more liquids. (A rule of thumb is that urine should be a light straw color. If it’s darker, immediately drink down 2 glasses of water).

Vitamin B6: Your Health Depends on It

Posted at November 20, 2008 by admin

Vitamin B6 benefits you in maybe more ways than any other vitamin. Vitamin B6 has been called the “mighty vite” because of all the functions it performs. It is estimated that Vitamin B6 is involved with more than 101 chemical reactions that occur in our bodies.

Vitamin B6 helps us by aiding in the manufacturing of amino acids. Amino acids are what we need to build proteins. And as we all know, proteins are essential for the repair and growth of our tissue.

Vitamin B6 benefits our brains as well. Vitamin B6 helps us to make what’s called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that connect one nerve cell to the next and enable these two nerve cells to communicate with one another.

Some of these neurotransmitters are serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine and what’s called GABA. These neurotransmitters are essential for regulating our mood and even helping to ward off depression in our later years.

Vitamin B6 benefits us also by helping us to metabolize our foods and converting these foods into energy we need to get us through our day.

Even though the Vitamin B6 benefits we mentioned above are nothing to sneeze at (sorry, that’s Vitamin C right?), we feel that Vitamin B6 may play a part in preventing disease – vascular disease and brain disease.

Vitamin B6 Benefits Us in Our Fight Against Vascular Disease

Vascular Disease can take many forms i.e. heart disease and stroke for instance. And although there are many factors leading up to vascular disease, one of our bodies’ chemicals has been identified as an independent risk factor. That chemical is what’s called homocysteine (I know – “i” before “e” except after “c”)

We covered homocysteine quite a bit on our Folic Acid page, so I will refer you there if you really want to learn about homocysteine.

But just briefly, homocysteine is a byproduct of our eating meat. Normally our bodies want to convert homocysteine into methionine which your body needs to make proteins and to perform other chemical processes. However, we need Vitamin B6 benefits to do so. Remember – homocysteine is bad – methionine is good.

Many recent and exciting studies have shown the indisputable relationship between Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B6 and a significant lowering of our homocysteine levels and along with lower homocysteine levels, a significant lowering of our risk for vascular disease.

A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association titled “Homocysteine vs. Vitamin B6″ tells us that “in fact, the study showed that people with the highest blood levels of vitamin B6 had about one third the risk of developing heart disease compared with people with the lowest levels of Vitamin B6.”

Vitamin B6 Benefits Us In Our Fight Against Losing Our Minds

Again, although there are many factors that can contribute to us losing our minds (our kids for instance), the “H” word has once again reared its ugly head – yes homocysteine.

A study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition stresses the importance of the B Vitamins Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B6 in the normal functioning of our brains. This particular study even links a deficiency of these vitamins to a cognitive decline in our later years leading to Alzheimer’s Disease.

This study titled “B vitamins, homocysteine, and neurocognitive function in the elderly” tells us that “the status of these vitamins is frequently inadequate in the elderly and recent studies have shown associations between loss of cognitive function or Alzheimer disease and inadequate B vitamin status.”

Vitamin B6 Benefits Us in Strengthening Our Immune Systems

Vitamin B6 helps our bodies to produce what’s called Lymphocytes. These are white blood cells that are called out to attack foreign invaders in our bodies called antigens. Antigens are toxins, bacteria and viruses that don’t belong in our bodies.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition tells us that folks who are low in Vitamin B6 are also low in antigen fighting lymphocytes. In a study titled “Pyridoxine (B6) supplementation: effect on lymphocyte responses in elderly persons” we are told “Vitamin B6 depletion significantly decreased percentage and total number of lymphocytes.”

Remember that the above diseases are chronic diseases. These diseases progress over time and may be a result of suboptimal nutritional intake over the same periods.

How Much Vitamin B6 Do I Need To Get My Vitamin B6 Benefits?

The RDA for an adult under 50 years is 1.3 mg. per day. For folks over 50 it is 1.7 mg. However, it is estimated that up to 30% of us are deficient in Vitamin B6. Women who are pregnant or nursing or are on oral contraceptives, people who smoke and older folks are especially at risk of being deficient in Vitamin B6.

Vitamin B6 is found naturally in turkey, chicken, salmon, tuna, bananas, potatoes (skin included), soybeans, nuts and brown rice for example. Of this group, a baked potato with the skin comes in at the highest with about 0.70 mg of Vitamin B6 benefits. A banana is next with about 0.68 mg. One cup of fortified cereal can get you between 0.5 to 2.5 mg.

You’ll usually find between 5 – 50 mg of Vitamin b6 in a vitamin supplement or a Vitamin B Complex product.
